Have used it mainly to scan 6圆 and 4x5 negs and trannies, also positive images.
I deliberated a while before getting this scanner, comparing reviews for other Epson and Canon scanners.
And the ICE feature does a remarkable job in producing clean images.
This scanner does an excellant job and allows one to correct slide problems before the final copy. All the flaws in my past film photography are painfully evident. The scan quality is exceptional far beyond what I was expecting. This scanner is efficient enough to complete such a task. I needed them to be at a higher resolution because I have the images printed on glass at 4 ft x 5 ft. I just purchased the Epson Perfection V700 Photo Color Scanner a few weeks ago, to scan 4 x 5 negatives. The biggest advantage is that I can set it up to work with 12 slides at a time using the supplied holder, and still get extraordinarily high resolution images of 5 to 8 mbytes - and I'm using the 6400dpi setting - there's still a 960. I have not copied B&W negatives yet, but see no reason to be concerned.
I have produced remarkable photos at 3200 dpi resolution, can't imagine what the full 12000 dpi would be. At 4800dpi,(6400 seems like overkill and photo-i's reviews indicate 4800 seems to be optimal) from a 35mm transparency you get approximately a 50mb file!. I have recommended this device to friends and one did buy it. I wish there was a Linux version of the software and drivers (I'm not that good with gimp). This issue is not only restricted to the Epson software - even Microsoft products have this issue. After a few moments the system clears itself and processing continues. I blame Windows more than Epson for the fact that the software temporarily 'hangs' on a regular basis. ots of additional research is needed to clarify what the controls do.
The manual is not very useful for the amateur l. I use ICE when necessary it isn't totally perfect but it does an overall good job (one of the better cleanups is attached). Overall I am quite pleased with the results. I've been using the manual (professional) mode and adjusting color balance and cleaning up.
The quality of the slides have ranged from excellent to downright color-shifted. I have scanned in excess of 3000 slides in the past two years some of the slides are as old as 60 years.
